I want to bring your attention to an election that could benefit our program. It is something that is dear to all of us. Bobby Popp grew up and attended school in a western Pennsylvania steel mill town where his father, Joe Popp, worked in the steel mills and was a union member for over 40 years. His mother, Alice Popp, was a housewife and raised eight children. Bobby was a student athlete and was fortunate to obtain a scholarship to Michigan State University to get a degree and play football for Duffy Daugherty. Bobby graduated from MSU with a B.S. degree and started a teaching and coaching career.
After one year at Albion College as a football coach, Bobby moved on to the University of Colorado where he earned his M.S. degree and served as a graduate assistant football coach under Sonny Grandelius, his former backfield coach at MSU.
Bobby spent the next eight years as a teacher and head football coach at Northeastern Junior College and then moved to North Carolina to take an assistant coaching position with Wake Forest University. Bobby decided to leave his education and coaching career to return to the Lansing area to enter the restaurant business. After many years in this industry, he sold the business and started a silkscreen and embroidery business which he still maintains. He is also currently a Director of the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl.
During the years since his return to the Lansing area, Bobby has followed closely the political, athletic, and academic climate at MSU and has participated in many activities, special events, and meetings.
Bobby lives with his wife Barbara just five miles from campus, in Haslett, and has two grown children, Debbie and Bobby Jr.
Bobby loves and respects his alma mater, remembering what MSU did for him. Now, he wouId Iike to return and give back as an MSU Trustee.
