Two Spartans to be added to the Ring of Fame

Written by
Former Michigan State All-Americans and College Football Hall of Famers Brad Van Pelt and John Pingel will have their names added to Spartan Stadium’s “Ring of Fame” prior to MSU’s Sept. 18 home game against Notre Dame.
The Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund Michigan Chapter held its second annual Hall of Fame Induction Charity Dinner at the Rock Financial Showplace in Novi, Michigan on Saturday, July 24th at 6:30 PM.

The event honored 14 individuals for their outstanding football careers and contributions to the community. Prior to the dinner from 10 AM to 4PM, many of the former players signed autographs at the venue. All of the proceeds from the events will be directed to the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund.

The honorees include Pro Football Hall of Famers Mike Ditka, Joe Schmidt, and Lem Barney, legendary NFL announcer Pat Summerall, former Lion standouts Mike Lucci, Lomas Brown, and Tom Nowatzke, former Baltimore Colt great Tom Matte, University of Michigan stars Bob Chappuis and John Greene, former U of M coach Lloyd Carr, current Michigan Athletic Director David Brandon, and Michigan State stars Lynn Chandnois and Walt Kowalczyk. Detroit Piston play by play announcer and the former voice of the Detroit Lions Mark Champion will be the MC at the dinner.

Lynn Chandnois was born in the Upper Peninsula and moved to Flint after his parents passed away living with his aunt to go to school. He earned All State honors in both football and basketball at Flint Central and in 1946 joined the US Naval Air Corps and served for two years after high school graduation. He was a halfback for MSU going both ways and returned kicks for the Spartans. He ranks first in career pass interceptions (20) and interception return yardage (384) and was the team’s MVP in 1948 and an All-American in 1949. He was the State of Michigan’s Outstanding Amateur Athlete in 1950.

Lynn was drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the first round (8th overall) and Played for the Stealers 7 years and was named all pro for two of those years. He led the NFL in all-purpose yards in 1953 and yards per kick return in 1951 and 1952. Many today say that Lynn should have been named the NFL’s Player of the Year in 1953 but the award was not given out that year. Only Gale Sayers has a higher lifetime NFL Kick-Off return Average than Lynn.

Lynn's close friend George Guerre accepted the award for Lynn who is recuperating from a stroke. The following day George and I visited Lynn to present him with his award.

Walt Kowalczyk went to high school in Westfield, Massachusetts where he received the Harry Agganis Award in 1954 as the best high school athlete in New England. By the fall of 1955 he was the starting right halfback helping to lead the Spartans to the Rose Bowl and a 17-14 win over UCLA. It was there the coach of the Bruins, so highly impressed by Walt’s ability dubbed him the “Sprinting Blacksmith”. Walt suffered an injury in his junior year but returned strong his senior year and became a consensus All-American. His biggest game came against Michigan when he ran for 113 yards and scored the first TD in a 35-6 victory.

In three seasons Walt amassed over 1200 yards rushing and was named All Big Ten and a consensus All-American in 1957. He played in the East-West Shrine Game and the Hula Bowl after the 1957 season and scored a touchdown in each game. In 1958 Walt was drafted in the first round (6th overall) by the Philadelphia Eagles. With a loaded backfield in Philadelphia, he was traded to Detroit and then to the expansion Dallas Cowboys where he got off to a great start. He finished the year 3rd in rushing overall and 5th in receiving.

He retired from professional football in 1961 and returned to Michigan to begin his teaching career in Pontiac. He has also served as a public abuse counselor and now, still enjoys teaching drivers education on a part time basis and helps with many local charities as well as taking food to the elderly.

"We are thrilled to be able to honor these very deserving individuals for their contributions to football but also for their charitable work in the community," said Ron Rice, former Detroit Lion, President of the National Football Players Association Former Players Detroit Chapter and member of the Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund- Michigan chapter.

The Gridiron Greats Assistance Fund is a 501 c 3 nonprofit corporation dedicated to helping retired NFL players in need of financial assistance for basic needs and medical assistance in large part due to inadequate disability and/or pensions. The organization has provided over $2 million in financial aid and medical assistance to retired NFL players.

Again, congratulations to our two Spartan and MSU FPA Members, Lynn Chandnois and Walt Kowalczyk. See additional Photo's on the MSU FPA Website.

I want to bring your attention to an election that could benefit our program. It is something that is dear to all of us.  Michigan State University and how it is run. You will recall last year we posted the fact that Coach George Perles was running for the Board of Trustees of MSU. He ran as a Democrat. But that didn’t matter because we new deep down in his heart he had the best interests in the University at hand, and he was one of us.

This web site does not play politics, but it does look at where members of the MSU FPA can do well for our organization as well as help our University. This year we have another MSU FPA member running for the Board of Trustees. He is Bobby Popp, running on the Democratic Ticket. Doesn’t matter, he is one of us and has our interests at heart. He has walked in our shoes and is aware of the issues at hand.

Bobby Popp grew up and attended school in a western Pennsylvania steel mill town where his father, Joe Popp, worked in the steel mills and was a union member for over 40 years.

His mother, Alice Popp, was a housewife and raised eight children. Bobby was a student athlete and was fortunate to obtain a scholarship to Michigan State University to get a degree and play football for Duffy Daugherty.

Bobby graduated from MSU with a B.S. degree and started a teaching and coaching career.
After one year at Albion College as a football coach, Bobby moved on to the University of Colorado where he earned his M.S. degree and served as a graduate assistant football coach under Sonny Grandelius, his former backfield coach at MSU.

Bobby spent the next eight years as a teacher and head football coach at Northeastern Junior College and then moved to North Carolina to take an assistant coaching position with Wake Forest University. Bobby decided to leave his education and coaching career to return to the Lansing area to enter the restaurant business. After many years in this industry, he sold the business and started a silkscreen and embroidery business which he still maintains. He is also currently a Director of the Little Caesar's Pizza Bowl.

During the years since his return to the Lansing area, Bobby has followed closely the political, athletic, and academic climate at MSU and has participated in many activities, special events, and meetings.

Bobby lives with his wife Barbara just five miles from campus, in Haslett, and has two grown children, Debbie and Bobby Jr.

Bobby loves and respects his alma mater, remembering what MSU did for him. Now, he wouId Iike to return and give back as an MSU Trustee.

Fellow MSU FPA  Spartan Members,

Get out your calendar and mark this year’s homecoming game vs. Illinois on October 16 at 12 noon.  Our tailgate party will start three hours prior to the game.

Your Football Player’s Association will be honoring the 1990 Big Ten Champion Team coached by George Perles.

This year’s reunion will be our 8th since the start of our organization.  The MSUFPA is growing and we need your support starting with Friday night’s dinner at the Kellogg Hotel and Conference Center.  We need you to contact any teammates and also, please send me a list of any teammates that you may have information on (phone number, address, email, etc.).  It is very important that we have your email address also even if you cannot be here!  This weekend is for all of our members, players, managers and coaches to honor the 1990 team.  Since it is homecoming and we play Illinois, it will be a sellout. Our tickets will be limited so get yours early…first come, first serve on the tickets.  Remember: “Sign up early”!

The Athletic department, under the direction of Athletic Director Mark Hollis, is having us as their guests during the game.  Each player, manager or coach will receive two tickets to the game.  In order to qualify, you must attend the Friday dinner or Saturday tailgate (plus pay the $20. fee).  We would like to have 100% attendance at Friday night’s dinner.  What a thrill to catch up and share stories with all of your teammates at the Kellogg Center!  Remember to bring your camera.

Please find attached below your application to fill out and return along with the proposed itinirary. Also enclosed is a listing of hotels in the area to make your reservations.

Take care, & GO SPARTANS!

Henry C Bullough

About Us

The MSU Football Players Association (MSUFPA) is an organization that was formed in midyear 2004 and was given its birth by Head Coach John L. Smith. It wasn’t until the beginning of 2005 that the association got functioning, but when it did a strong force was created within the family of Spartans and a tradition had begun. The purpose of the Association is to perpetuate the Spartan football tradition and to enhance the success of the MSU football program. Our goal is to sustain a working relationship and to provide a network of communication to link the membership with the existing football program.
